Edmond Water Resources Department Implements Rain Barrel Program

As Edmond’s population continues to grow, water usage slowly climbs as well. One of Edmond’s Water Resources goals is to examine ways to reduce the water demand, while ensuring the water supply is being utilized properly and recognizing the value of water conservation.

Due to the high increase in summer time water usage, one of the number one targets for conservation measures is landscape irrigation. Edmond’s water demand in winter months in approximately 8 million gallons per day (MGD), while it more than doubles (on average) in summer months to 20 MGD.

The purpose of the Rain Barrel Program is to encourage residents to conserve water; rain water collected will be able to be reused to irrigate trees, flowers beds and gardens. This program is designed to support the City’s Water Conservation Plan, which is also aimed at conserving and managing summer water usage.

“The City completed a 50 year water supply plan in 2009. One of the plans major considerations was water conservation. The rain barrel program is the first step towards raising awareness and the need to use this precious resource more wisely, now and in the future,” Kris Neifing, Water Resources Superintendent.

Now through August 18, residents can sign up to be placed on a list for the selection process (random number generating process) to receive a rain barrel. Residents will be notified via email if they have been selected to receive one of the three styles of barrels. If selected, residents will receive notification that will include pick up instructions and an invitation to a free rain barrel installation and maintenance workshop. There is a limited quantity available and the styles of barrels vary from 40, 50 and 60 gallons.

If selected to receive a barrel, residents will be charged $5 to their Edmond Utility Bill.

You can register online at edmondok.com/rainbarrels, or by calling 359-4518.

To participate in the Rain Barrel Program, you must be an Edmond residential water utility customer. There is one barrel available per utility customer. Residents in rental properties must receive consent from the property owner.
