Risk Watch
Risk Watch is the first comprehensive injury-prevention curriculum for children in preschool through the eighth grade.
Risk Watch was developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) with co-founding from Lowe's Home Safety Council in collaboration with a distinguished coalition of national safety experts, the private sector and safety advocates. It is designed to help families create safer homes by teaching skills and knowledge to make positive choices about their personal safety. Each of the following topics are covered:
- Motor Vehicle Safety
- Fire and Burn Safety
- Choking, Suffocation and Strangulation Prevention
- Poisoning Prevention
- Falls Prevention
- Firearms Injury Prevention
- Bike and Pedestrian Safety
- Water Safety
Are injuries an inevitable part of growing up?
A few bumps and bruises are an unavoidable by-product of a healthy childhood. But most serious injuries are not inevitable. Traffic injuries, drowning, fires, scalding, choking, poisoning and falls are not random "accidents." They are preventable. With education, motivation and the support of caring adults, children can learn to be safer.
Our commitment to this goal is crucial. Every year in the United States, one-quarter of all children 14 and under are hurt seriously enough to require medical attention. Each time a child is injured or killed by a preventable accident, everyone suffers - the child, the family, classmates and friends and the entire community.
